"Improving our nation's education system has long been the cornerstone of my policy agenda. Since I am so seldom in Colorado during the school week, I try to fit in as many school visits as I can during my district work periods. This past week, I managed six school visits during one day and visited two more schools on my trip to the mountains. One of my main legislative efforts in education is to help expand and replicate successful charter schools." said Jared Polis.

A self-portrait Beaulieu drew on her computer using a pen tablet won a “gold key” award at a scholastic art fair in Boston last year. Other works by Beaulieu have been exhibited elsewhere. But even art class at Lowell High frustrated Beaulieu. “I don’t need terminology and assignments,” she says. “Why do I have to write a three-page paper about art? Art should be something you enjoy. You have to express yourself ... School was just hopeless for me.”

Internet-based schools have popped up across the country in the past few years because of improved technology and changing education laws. As of January, there were 173 virtual charter schools teaching about 92,000 students in 18 states, according to the North American Council for Online Learning. Nationally, little research has been done on the effectiveness of such online schools. They’re just too new.

Universities should be allowed to charge American-style tuition fees of up to £20,000 a year to improve the quality of teaching, according to a report. It calls for the current cap of £3,145-a-year to be lifted if British institutions are to keep up with their U.S. counterparts. The proposals, from businessman Sir John Chisholm, would mean parents facing hefty bills for their children's degrees.

Ludwig van Beethoven probably never envisioned putting words to one of his best-known works, his Fifth Symphony. But Archway Youth Services School teacher Debbie Rowe did. In search of a way to teach troubled teens about classical music, Rowe put lyrics to about 70 pieces, including Gregorian chants and music by Mozart, Beethoven and Vivaldi, among others. The lyrics detail the composers' lives and the histories behind the masterpieces.
