Only 64 per cent of Victorian students are completing a year 12 certificate or equivalent according to federal figures - far fewer than claimed by the state Education Department.

Data prepared for The Sunday Age by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority, which oversees the VCE, show a significant decline in enrolments for the more difficult maths subjects - maths methods and specialist maths - over the past decade.

THE backpacks at Albert Park College look a little small. But then everything at the school, which is entering its second year, is a little different. Students helped design the bags and point out that they do not need many books. Nor any calculators, notebooks, atlases and diaries. Instead each student has what the principal calls an "electronic pencil box": an iPad.

Timothy S. Norfolk -- It is crucial to our economic survival that we do better in mathematics and science. Global competition requires manufacturing to be made more efficient and more automated. Incredibly sophisticated mathematical tools are used in the analysis of large data sets in medical research and economics, and in forming government policy on energy and other resources.

Secondary schools have struggled for years to attract specialist maths and science teachers, particularly in regional and outer-suburban areas. As a result, principals have sometimes reduced the curriculum on offer, or have had teachers with no specialist training take the subjects. 0

On the most recent NAEP administration, 40 states, plus the District of Columbia, met the goal of including 95 percent of all students in the original testing sample for the reading assessment for grades 4 and 8. In math, Oklahoma was the only state to fall short of the 95 percent inclusion goal for both grades, while Maryland did so in grade 8.
