Education Reconsidered: Beyond the Death of Critical Education

Sculb sumitted ago via http://www.truth-out.org (Views: 8, Clicks: 3)  View Story

Mainstream educators and commentators are warning that the United States, once in the forefront among advanced capitalist societies in graduation rates, has fallen to 12th place and is still tumbling. Many are concerned that education has become a national security issue. Others point out that the engines of the global economy are math and science and this country is turning out fewer trained physicists, chemists, biologists, mathematicians and computer scientists.

The bill would increase spending on nutrition programs by $4.5 billion over 10 years, offset by spending cuts to other agriculture programs so the deficit is not increased. The measure would establish nutritional standards for all food sold in schools, including the food in vending machines, and increase the federal reimbursement rate for school meals by 6 cents per meal — the first increase other than inflationary increases since 1973.

Anti-intellectualism in American Higher Ed

Sculb sumitted ago via http://www.truth-out.org (Views: 13, Clicks: 4)  View Story

Higher education has a responsibility not only to search for the truth regardless of where it may lead, but also to educate students to make authority and power politically and morally accountable. Current trends and recent history can also be dangerously misleading. An example is the Thanksgiving turkey that is being fattened up for slaughter. As the turkey sees it, daily experience reinforces the image of the butcher as a benefactor who can be counted on to provide delightful delicacies on a daily basis — a good friend — right up until the day when the butcher reveals his true intentions.

How Oklahoma's capitol moved from Guthrie to Oklahoma City

Combine a power-hungry cabal with a compliant governor. In the dead of night sneak the state seal through a window, carry it by horseback across red dirt roads 30 miles to hide in a closet at a hotel. Declare by proclamation that the hotel is the de facto state capitol building.

Re: Economic Theory: "Black Swan" Events

Very interesting - and sometimes scary - article on modern economics. Worth a read for the elephant reference alone.
