A draft of grade-by-grade common standards is undergoing significant revisions in response to feedback that the outline of what students should master is confusing and insufficiently user-friendly.

The Department of Education is a long way from Chicago’s South Side churches where Duncan, his sister and brother would study alongside neighborhood kids. But the job of education secretary is closely tied to the challenges many children still must face. Even as a baby, Duncan accompanied his mother, Sue, every day to the tutoring program she began and still runs.

Obama Faces Fierce Fight to Keep Education Promises

As the new administration prepares to take over the Education Department, school experts say one of Obama's first -- and toughest -- jobs must be restoring the broad bipartisan support it took to pass the 2002 No Child Left Behind Act, which aims to boost the achievement of poor children. That consensus has splintered, with people on both sides of the aisle souring on the law as it is overdue for reauthorization in Congress.

As pressure mounts to prepare elementary students for high-stakes tests and for algebra in middle school, the focus on instilling math's most basic skills is intensifying. Many elementary schools are turning to math specialists or coaches to add expertise to a teaching workforce dominated by generalists who, studies show, are vastly under-prepared in math.

Test Industry Split Over 'Formative' Assessment

Newman sumitted ago via http://www.edweek.org (Views: 110, Clicks: 12)

Formative assessments, also known as “classroom assessments,” are in some ways easier to define by what they are not. They’re not like the long, year-end, state-administered, standardized, No Child Left Behind Act-required exams that testing professionals call “summative.” Nor are they like the shorter, middle-of-the-year assessments referred to as “benchmark” or “interim” assessments

School districts that require all students to pass algebra are faced with a dilemma: how to make sure that their high mathematical standards aren't pushing some students out of school altogether. Asking more of students can actually help decrease dropouts - but it has to be done right with smart programming and student encouragement.

School Board Chairman Milton C. Johns said the panel wants to learn more about the math curriculum, called "Investigations in Number, Data and Space." School Board members appear to be mixed about the program's effectiveness, and Johns said he would like to postpone any decisions about keeping, cutting or scaling back the program until results from the state Standards of Learning (SOL) exams are released later this year.
