It turns out math can fix the problem. Georgia Tech professor John Bartholdi and University of Chicago professor Donald Eisenstein used complex algebra to develop a kind of anti-bus-bunching formula. They took what’s known as the Markov Chain through the wringer. It’s a math theory that shows predictable long-term behavior.

Because poverty is so high in Oklahoma and has such a large effect on school performance, reducing poverty remains the best thing we can do to improve our overall test scores. However, Oklahoma seems to be doing as well as the nation as a whole in teaching these kids.

Colin Powell -- I believe that if you develop a reputation for kindness, even the most unpleasant decisions will go down easier. People will realize that your decision must be necessary and is not arbitrary or made without empathy. As the old saying goes, “To the world, you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world.”

When someone intelligent, forthright, aggressive, and respected lends their face to a subject slightly taboo, it makes a difference. Mike Wallace did the mental health community a favor in 1996 by going public with his diagnosis of depression. Although there is still stigma attached to having any mental illness, Wallace’s admission made it clear that depression does not descend only upon the faint of heart, and that it can be treated.
