It turns out math can fix the problem. Georgia Tech professor John Bartholdi and University of Chicago professor Donald Eisenstein used complex algebra to develop a kind of anti-bus-bunching formula. They took what’s known as the Markov Chain through the wringer. It’s a math theory that shows predictable long-term behavior.

Katherine Clark -- Last week I cohosted a legislative briefing on the importance of early childhood education with Arthur Rolnick of the University of Minnesota’s Human Capital Research Collaborative, a former economist at the Federal Reserve. Professor Rolnick’s research makes the economic case for early childhood education through new data and a comprehensive 40-year study.

The mistake has now been traced back to erroneous data provided by the Nevada education department to the U.S. Department of Education. The error not only draws into question the validity of the rankings, but the validity of other research that relies on the federally maintained Common Core of Data, which tracks information about students and staff in every public school, district, and state education agency in the country. The Common Core of Data is used as part of the U.S. News ranking system.

Erik W. Robelen -- As the general public now gets a chance to weigh in on a first draft of common standards in science, the question arises: Who is writing these voluntary standards, anyway? The short answer? It's complicated.

Mike Wallace: His contribution to mental health

Buldog sumitted ago via http://communities.washingtontimes.com (Views: 24, Clicks: 4)
View Story

When someone intelligent, forthright, aggressive, and respected lends their face to a subject slightly taboo, it makes a difference. Mike Wallace did the mental health community a favor in 1996 by going public with his diagnosis of depression. Although there is still stigma attached to having any mental illness, Wallace’s admission made it clear that depression does not descend only upon the faint of heart, and that it can be treated.

Andrew Spar -- If the test is flawed, there is no way to compare students' scores from one year to the next to determine how much they have learned. Unless we are able to know exactly what is happening with the test, there is no way we can or should trust the test data.
