Re: A Specialists’ Debate on Autism Has Many Worried Observers

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, now under revision, is the standard reference for mental disorders, driving research, treatment and insurance decisions. Since 1994, when recognition of Asperger syndrome was first included as an autism-spectrum disorder, diagnosis of the condition has surged.

Re: Australia: Fad policies override basics of education

We were told we'd never teach to the NAPLAN test. I've got news: we already are. The shelves of education suppliers are filled with master books of NAPLAN-style tests, while in the ACT, for example, principals' appraisals are linked directly to NAPLAN test results, as are staff. Schools are supplied with software to analyse their test results. It identifies areas of weakness, and strategies to overcome that.

In 2008, the National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) commenced in Australian schools.
