Over the next two years, Michigan and 44 other states will be transitioning to the same grade-level curriculum standards for their K-12 schools. There's a huge debate over whether the common core curriculum is a good idea.

Gov. Rick Scott tonight weighed in on the FCAT writing issue, saying the ”significant contrast” between this year’s and last year’s scores is an “obvious indication” that the FL DOE needs to “review the issue.” His statement also included his often-repeated support for “measurement” as it applies to education. “Our students must know how to read and write, and our education system must be able to measure and benchmark their progress so we can set clear education goals,” Scott said.

As fourth, eighth and tenth graders across Florida write their hearts out (really?) for the FCAT, we thought it appropriate to consider who will evaluate their work and decide whether they're meeting grade level expectations. No, it's not people who answer a Craigslist ad (at least not anymore). But is it much better than that?

Based on a history of grading errors, the National Center for Fair & Open Testing has called for an independent audit and investigation of Pearson, the company that designed and graded the state’s 2012 FCAT exams. “Pearson has a troubling history of testing errors, the worst in an unregulated, irresponsible industry,” said FairTest Public Education Director Bob Schaeffer, a Southwest Florida resident.
