Dropout 'epidemic' in St. Louis is targeted

After a year of working to win over St. Louis colleges, businesses and churches, the Mathews-Dickey Boys' & Girls' Club has launched the largest initiative co-founder Martin Mathews has ever attempted.

The initiative was also inspired by "The Silent Epidemic," a report of national dropout statistics by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. According to the foundation's report, the graduation rate nationwide is between 68 percent and 71 percent. This rate drops for minorities at 50 percent.
