Oklahoma board to make retirement system payment

The state Board of Education will take the $18 million it planned to use to pay for teachers' health insurance costs and apply it toward the teachers' retirement system.

Garrett, who cast the deciding vote in favor of transferring the money, said while the state is required to pay the retirement credit, it is not required to pay for teachers' health insurance costs, which are the responsibility of individual school districts. She said the decision "does mean that school districts will have to come up with that $18 million."
