Jay Mathews on trends in education -- "I love following trends in education, particularly those that involve favorite topics such as high-performing charter schools, college admissions practices, great teachers, weak-minded curricular fads and college-level courses in high school. We have two interesting trends in this last category, both having to do with the rise in influence of Advanced Placement, and to a lesser extent International Baccalaureate."

Wide Access To AP, IB Isn't Hurting Anybody

nitajo sumitted ago via http://www.washingtonpost.com (Views: 74, Clicks: 9)

When students are considered not ready for AP and denied the opportunity to take those courses, they and their teachers don't get a chance to measure themselves against the incorruptible standard of an AP exam written and graded by outside experts. Without that tough benchmark, high school courses, even those labeled "honors" or "advanced," often settle for mediocrity, giving students good grades for little work.

The differences of opinion can be confusing, but there are grounds for future agreement and cooperation. All of the combatants in the college-level course debate share a desire to raise the level of learning in U.S. high schools, considered a weak spot in the U.S. education system. The reading and math scores of 17-year-old Americans have not improved significantly in 30 years. Encouraging well-taught, college-level courses appears to be a promising way to break out of that slump.

IB is not just for advanced students, although at Merrimack Valley it would help us better prepare students for college than our current AP and Running Start courses. Additionally, in a community where parents are hard-pressed to pay for college, IB would offer up to 24 college credits to the students who chose the IB diploma route.
