Principal Virginia Grabbe, 84, still a hit with kids as she says goodbye

Grabbe will finish her last day at Isador Cohen Elementary School today, wrapping up a career in teaching that has spanned 64 years and two states. Grabbe retires as the oldest principal in California and with a certificate of recognition from state Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell.

In schoolyards across the country, all it takes to attract a crowd are the words "Fight! Fight! Fight!" But students are increasingly showing up with cameras to record the brawls, then posting the footage on the Internet. Some of the videos have been viewed more than a million times.

Percentage of California students passing high school exit exam drops

The passing rate of 90.2 percent for 2008's graduating class was down from last year's 94 percent. However, this was the first year that students receiving special education services were required to pass the exam to receive a diploma, said State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell.

An algebra war has broken out in the top levels of government that could cause shock waves in middle schools across the state. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Tuesday urged the California State Board of Education to require that all eighth-graders be tested in Algebra 1. If the board agrees during a meeting today, it would mark a huge shift for California middle schools.
