FCAT writing scores needs review, says Gov. Scott and superintendents (2012)

Gov. Rick Scott tonight weighed in on the FCAT writing issue, saying the ”significant contrast” between this year’s and last year’s scores is an “obvious indication” that the FL DOE needs to “review the issue.”
His statement also included his often-repeated support for “measurement” as it applies to education.
“Our students must know how to read and write, and our education system must be able to measure and benchmark their progress so we can set clear education goals,” Scott said.

It's FCAT Writing time. Do you know who's scoring your child's exam? (2011)

As fourth, eighth and tenth graders across Florida write their hearts out (really?) for the FCAT, we thought it appropriate to consider who will evaluate their work and decide whether they're meeting grade level expectations.
No, it's not people who answer a Craigslist ad (at least not anymore). But is it much better than that?

The worst eighth-grade math teacher in New York City

Aaron Pallas -- Using a statistical technique called value-added modeling, the Teacher Data Reports compare how students are predicted to perform on the state ELA and math tests, based on their prior year’s performance, with their actual performance. Teachers whose students do better than predicted are said to have “added value”; those whose students do worse than predicted are “subtracting value.” By definition, about half of all teachers will add value, and the other half will not.

Making the Grade

Nancy Flanagan -- So robo-readers can grade student essays faster and more "accurately" than actual humans--if you're willing to overlook a few minor details, such as logic and coherence? I have to admit, being able to grade 16,000 essays in twenty seconds is pretty impressive.
