Assessment Consortium Crafts Plan for Formative Resources

Catherine Gewertz -- As you know, the two assessment consortia are working on a range of resources. Yesterday, I sat in on one of the twice-monthly teleconferences of states who belong to the SMARTER Balanced Assessment Consortium, and a key topic of discussion was finalizing the master work plan for the online bank of formative resources it will create for teachers. The work plan is in late draft stages; governing states in the consortium are scheduled to vote on its approval by May 15.

Utah To Downgrade Its Commitment to Use Common Tests

Catherine Gewertz -- You might have heard that Utah has been surfing the waves of common-standards controversy lately. Now it appears that the standards aren't the only thing the state is uneasy about. It's also uneasy about the tests being designed for them.

Atom-Based Sensor Could Help Children's Brain Research

A new atom-based magnetic sensor could help scientists get a clearer look at how children's brains work.
Magnetoencephalography, or MEG, is an imaging method that uses magnets to measure the magnetic fields created by electrical activity when different parts of the brain are activated. It is frequently used to map the areas of the brain associated with different cognitive functions, as well as identify specific signatures related to conditions such as autism and epilepsy.
