FCAT writing scores needs review, says Gov. Scott and superintendents (2012)

Gov. Rick Scott tonight weighed in on the FCAT writing issue, saying the ”significant contrast” between this year’s and last year’s scores is an “obvious indication” that the FL DOE needs to “review the issue.”
His statement also included his often-repeated support for “measurement” as it applies to education.
“Our students must know how to read and write, and our education system must be able to measure and benchmark their progress so we can set clear education goals,” Scott said.

It's FCAT Writing time. Do you know who's scoring your child's exam? (2011)

As fourth, eighth and tenth graders across Florida write their hearts out (really?) for the FCAT, we thought it appropriate to consider who will evaluate their work and decide whether they're meeting grade level expectations.
No, it's not people who answer a Craigslist ad (at least not anymore). But is it much better than that?

Australia: Why Australian literature is alive and well and living in our universities

Ken Gelder -- Australian literature is alive and well and taught right across the country. It is taught in more than 300 subjects in about 40 tertiary institutions. I know this because of the AustLit database, one of many university resources designed to increase students' knowledge of their national literature, which is taught not only in English departments, but in indigenous studies, creative writing, theatre and performance, Australian studies and children's literature.

A million families will get a new cash payment of up to $820 for every child they have in school, being spared the hassle of claiming back education costs in their tax returns.

Australia: TAFEs hit hard in battle for public education

Editorial -- Facing a revenue squeeze, the Baillieu government's second budget sharpened the focus on its priorities. Its law-and-order spending was no surprise - even if driven more by fears than the facts of crime. What is questionable is the decision to cut TAFE funding while spending close to $1 billion on a new prison, extra police and armed public transport guards.
